How to turn on tips on OnlyFans, and why the button might be missing

To turn on tips on OnlyFans, finish setting up your creator account and start posting. OnlyFans says the tip button switches on once you've completed onboarding and started posting, so the job is to get your account fully approved and put your first post live. After that, fans can tip you from $3 upwards, within limits that depend on how long they've been on OnlyFans.
How tips get switched on
OnlyFans' help article on the tip button links it to two things: finishing onboarding and starting to post. Until you've done both, the button stays off.
Onboarding is the set-up and verification OnlyFans asks of every creator. Under its terms, you must be 18 or over, and a creator account needs:
- a valid ID and two photos of you;
- a bank account or payment method;
- a payout option;
- any further age or identity checks OnlyFans asks for.
The payout methods on offer depend on the country you live in, and OnlyFans only shows the list of supported countries inside your account, under Add Bank.
Once you're approved, start posting. A new subscriber who lands on an empty feed has little reason to stay, so it's worth having a few weeks of posts ready before you launch anyway. Our guide to starting an OnlyFans covers that first stretch.
You may come across guides describing a tips switch tucked away in your settings. OnlyFans' own help article ties the tip button to onboarding and posting, and the site's layout changes often, so if your account looks different from what a guide describes, go by your account and the help centre.
Where fans can tip you
Once the button is on, fans can send you a tip on top of their subscription and anything else they buy. Exactly where the option appears, and what it looks like, depends on the current version of the site, so check your own page rather than going by a screenshot of someone else's.
The simplest check is to ask a subscriber you trust what they can see: on your profile, on a recent post and in their chat with you. Ask again after OnlyFans changes its layout, so that what you tell fans still matches what they see.
When you mention tips to fans, describe what your page actually shows. How to bring tipping up without it sounding like a sales pitch, and how to build a tip menu around it, is covered in our guide to getting more tips on OnlyFans.
Tip limits
At the time of writing, OnlyFans sets these limits on tips:
| Limit | Amount |
|---|---|
| Smallest tip | $3 |
| Largest tip from a fan who's been on OnlyFans under four months | $100 |
| Largest tip from a fan who's been on OnlyFans four months or more | $200 |
| Total a new fan can spend in a day | $500, raised for long-standing users |
Three things are worth knowing about how these work in practice.
The four months count from when the fan joined OnlyFans, not from when they subscribed to you. A fan who's been on the platform for a year can tip up to $200 on their first day on your page.
The $500 is a daily total. A newer fan who has already spent money that day has less room left for a tip.
Tips are in US dollars, like every price on OnlyFans, and any sales tax or VAT is added on top of what the fan pays.
If you use a tip menu, keep every item at $100 or less so a newer fan never hits the cap. Limits change from time to time, so check the current figures before you build anything around them.
What you receive from a tip
OnlyFans keeps 20% of every tip, as it does with subscriptions and paid messages, so you receive 80%. A $20 tip puts $16 in your balance. Your bank or e-wallet may also charge currency or receiving fees, and those come out of your share.
Tips follow the same payout rules as the rest of your earnings:
- New earnings sit in your pending balance for 7 days before you can withdraw them. In a small number of countries with high rates of reversed payments, the hold is 21 days, dropping to 7 days four months after your first earning.
- The minimum withdrawal depends on your payout method and is $20 for most methods.
- Fan purchases are normally non-refundable, but that changes if the terms were broken, and refunds and chargebacks are deducted from your earnings. OnlyFans can't stop a fan filing a chargeback.
Tips are income like the rest of what your page earns, and tax is your responsibility. Our guide to OnlyFans taxes covers what to keep track of.
The rules that come with tips
Turning tips on doesn't change the platform's rules, and a few of them come up around tipping more than anywhere else.
- Tips stay on OnlyFans. Off-platform payments aren't allowed, and sending fans to pay you elsewhere risks deactivation. Don't share a payment app handle, even when a fan offers to tip you that way.
- Never take a tip for something you can't offer. The acceptable use policy bans in-person meetings, and OnlyFans' creator guidelines rule out raffles and competitions, along with any mention of meeting up.
- Be honest about what a tip gets the fan. Misleading descriptions break the same policy, and a fan who feels tricked is the one most likely to dispute a payment.
If someone else replies to fans for you, the same rules apply to them. You stay responsible for everything that happens on your account.
Why your tip button isn't showing
If fans tell you they can't see a way to tip, work through these in order.
- Onboarding isn't finished. Check that your verification has been approved and that every part of set-up is complete, including the payout details the terms ask for. If your application was turned down, the most common reasons OnlyFans gives are poor selfies or ID photos, an expired or damaged ID, living in a country it can't pay out to, and having your other social media accounts set to private. Sort out whichever applies before anything else.
- You haven't posted yet. The button switches on once you start posting. If your first post is scheduled rather than live, wait until it's published, then check again.
- You're checking from your own side. Tipping is something fans do, so the clearest test is to ask a subscriber you trust what they can see.
- It's a problem on the fan's device. Ask them to reload the page or try another browser or device before you assume anything is wrong with your account.
- None of the above. If you've finished onboarding, you're posting, and fans still can't find a way to tip, contact OnlyFans through the help centre. Say what you've already checked so they don't send you back through the same steps.
When a fan says their tip won't go through
Sometimes the button is there but a particular tip fails. The limits are the usual reason, so check the amount against them:
- Below $3: the tip is under the minimum.
- Above $100 from a fan who's been on OnlyFans less than four months, or above $200 from anyone: the tip is over the single-tip cap.
- A newer fan who has spent a lot that day: they may have reached the $500 daily total.
The fix is a tip within the limit, or waiting until another day if they've reached the daily total. Never suggest they pay you through another app or site instead, which is an off-platform payment. If none of the limits explain it, the fan is best placed to raise it with OnlyFans through the help centre, since it may be something on their side, such as their payment method.
It helps to know these limits before a fan asks. A fan who gets an error and a confused reply may not try again, while one who hears "OnlyFans caps tips from newer accounts at $100, so anything up to that will go through" knows exactly what to do.
Once tips are working
Turning tips on is a one-off job. Getting fans to use them is an ongoing one. Our guide to getting more tips on OnlyFans covers tip menus, honest tip goals and thanking fans so they tip again. A line in your welcome message is a light way to let new subscribers know tipping is an option. For full sets and longer videos, a priced message or post usually works better than a tip, and our guide to OnlyFans PPV explains how to price them.
If you'd rather not keep track of limits, payouts and posting yourself, our account management service handles pricing, posting, your vault and promos every day, with a weekly report on what's coming in. If you'd like to talk it through, you can apply whenever it suits you.
